Course Overview 

This one-month online course is designed for students and professionals who need to improve their English skills for academic study. Whether you're preparing for university, college, or postgraduate programs, this course will help you build the language and study skills needed to succeed in an academic environment.

The course focuses on all four key academic language skills—academic writing, reading comprehension, speaking in seminars and presentations, and listening to lectures. A core feature of the course is personalized feedback and targeted practice, which will help you strengthen your performance and build confidence in an academic setting.

Course Requirements 

This is a live, instructor-led online course. To participate, you’ll need: 

  • A reliable internet connection 
  • A computer with a microphone and camera (preferred), or a tablet/smartphone if a computer is unavailable 
  • Earphones/headphones or speakers for clear audio 

 

This intensive online course is designed to help students develop the academic English skills required for success in English-speaking university environments. The program focuses on improving reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, with an emphasis on academic vocabulary, grammar, and communication strategies. Through guided practice and personalised feedback, participants will gain the confidence and competence needed for academic study, including essay writing, lecture comprehension, and seminar participation.

What will we cover?

A variety of academic English skills will be explored, tailored to the needs of the group. Core topics typically include: 

  • Academic speaking skills, including: 
    • Participating in seminars and tutorials 
    • Expressing opinions, agreeing/disagreeing respectfully 
    • Asking and responding to questions appropriately 
  • Academic writing skills, such as: 
    • Structuring essays, reports, and research papers 
    • Writing clear introductions, arguments, and conclusions 
    • Using appropriate academic tone and referencing styles 
  • Listening skills, including: 
    • Understanding and taking notes during lectures 
    • Identifying key ideas and supporting details 
    • Recognizing academic signposting language 
  • Reading skills, including: 
    • Skimming, scanning, and critical reading 
    • Interpreting academic articles, charts, and data 
    • Identifying argument structure and author bias 
  • Pronunciation and fluency training for presentations and discussions 
  • Academic vocabulary development, including collocations and subject-specific terms 
  • Grammar in academic contexts, focusing on clarity, accuracy, and formality 
  • Presentation skills, including visual aids, academic language, and body language 
  • Cross-cultural communication in academic settings, including understanding academic expectations in English-speaking institutions

Eligibility

The language level required to attend this program is intermediate to upper intermediate. Students will have to submit proof of their English Language Proficiency (e.g. IELTS/TOEFL certificates) or take a free online assessment, designed by the IELTS School of Toronto.
